Harewood House is a fun packed kids day out for the whole family. With history, adventure playground, trails and animals, there’s something for everyone.
Harewood is one of the Treasure Houses of England. Located in the heart of the stunning Yorkshire countryside, the 18th century country house is home to some of the finest art collections in Britain. It also offers families a full to bursting day with a huge variety of activities to do, all set in over 100 acres of gardens.
As you wander through the impressive house you can view Renaissance masterpieces and fine collections of china. From the stunning Yellow Drawing Room and State Dining Room through to the Pastry Room and Old Kitchen, there’s so much to learn. Kids can even try on the servant clothes and get a real feel for Victorian life.
Grounds and Gardens
With over 100 acres of magnificent ‘Capability Brown’ landscaped grounds to walk or run around, there’s plenty of space for your little ones to burn off some of their endless energy.
The award winning gardens include the Terrace, the Lakeside Garden, the Himalayan Garden and the Walled Garden, definitely somewhere for parents to relax and enjoy. For the kids, their excitement can be found at the Adventure Playground. With slides, swings and climbing frames to keep them busy, plus ice cream and picnic areas to refuel, it’s certainly a favourite with kids.
There’s the acclaimed bird garden, with penguins, owls, flamingos and parrots to see too. Check the times for the loveable penguin feeding as well, certainly something not to be missed. The Harewood Farm has alpacas, pygmy goats and pot bellied pigs, all waiting to meet you and your children. Talk to the keepers or cuddle a giant rabbit, it’s a perfect attraction for all animal lovers or budding farmers.
There’s also the opportunity to take your animal experience one step further. With Alpaca Walking, and Animal Keeper experiences. These experiences do come with age restrictions and costs so do check the website for availability before visiting.
The Harewood Bird Garden is a beautiful place to visit. There’s over 40 species of birds, from the endangered Bali starling to the ever popular colony of Humboldt penguins. You can learn about each bird, where it lives and its characteristics. It’s a real highlight of visiting Harewood House.
